At the Northeast / Midwest Bridge Preservation Partnership Annual Meeting in Chicago, Sam Brandt, PE, MS and Lucas Bradley, EIT of High Structural Erectors presented a case study on repairing a bridge girder that was struck twice by over-height loads in Goshen, New York.
The bridge carries SR 207 over Route 6 and was originally erected in 1995 by High's field crews, the group that became HSE. The first strike, in December 2024, pushed the fascia girder about two feet out of alignment. A second strike in 2025 took it to about three and a half feet and caused full section loss through the web.
What the talk covers
- Using NYSDOT's flown LiDAR data and NCHRP 271 strain limits to set where heat straightening ends and section replacement begins
- Keeping the structure stable with a strongback beam while the damaged girder section was removed
- Heat straightening the adjacent steel with calculated restraint forces, following FHWA's 2023 guidance
- Installing two new tee sections, matched to the existing camber, inside 15 minute rolling closures
The field repair was completed in about two and a half months, through a New York winter.
